LEILANI'S CHRISTMAS gift from Stellan was an exquisite set of diamond and emerald jewelry. She chastised him because she knew it was probably very expensive, but he assured her he hadn't spent any money on the jewels.

“They were my great-grandmother’s,” he said. “And she would be pleased that I have found someone worthy of them.”

“Then I would be honored to accept them,” she conceded. “Thank you, Stellan.” She felt bad about complaining about the gift, so much so that she decided she would never refuse a gift from him again. Her life might be too short for quibbling over baubles.

Stellan was not discouraged, or he didn’t show it. He then proceeded to give her gifts from all of his family, which included three more ensembles from Eija, one of which she’d labeled Leilani’s New Year’s Eve outfit, with a postscript that said, “You’ll want to wear the sapphire and diamond earrings with this.” It was a blue Sue Wong cocktail dress with adjustable spaghetti straps attached to a lavish beadwork textured bodice over a skirt of sheer, layered chiffon.

Her love for Stellan had grown so much in the short time they’d known one another as if it had been years. It wasn’t just because he was handsome, or wealthy or basically immortal. No; it had everything to do with how he cared for her. His loyalty, his sincerity, his incredible mind, and teasing humor. Everything about him made her feel as if she were finally home.

In another life or another point in time Leilani may have questioned how quickly this happened. She allowed herself into the relationship as if it were as natural as breathing. She should’ve run away in fear of the unknown when he shared his secret. But then, she would’ve been doomed to live a short and mediocre life.

But thankfully at this moment, she was almost grateful for her heart condition, because, without it, she would have allowed the fears and expectations of how things should be to hinder the beauty of how things were, blinding her of the magic of Stellan. Regardless of her feelings now, she kept them to herself only because she felt like it was too soon and Leilani wanted to be sure what she felt wasn’t a result of her magical pull to him.

Her birthmark flared a little from the revelation, and she wondered if this boded well for them or not. Then she felt a wave of arousal that practically made her weak in the knees.

“Are you alright?” Stellan’s brow furrowed as he took a step toward her. His long, pale fingers hovered over her chest, and Leilani bit back a moan at the thought of his hand finishing its descent and touching her boldly over her shirt. Another pulse of heat drummed through her, and Stellan’s eyes grew darker.

Then he closed them. Muttered in a hard, low guttural phrase in a language she didn’t understand and stepped away from her.

“I’m fine,” she whispered, lying through her teeth. Trembles cascaded up and down her body.
